Career Academies


Career Academies are a partnership between Lewis Cass ISD, Southwestern Michigan College, the four local districts (Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg, and Marcellus) and other interested districts. The academies provide 11th and 12th grade students an opportunity to earn college credit in a planned program of study while still in high school. Academy students attend classes on the campus of Southwestern Michigan College. Tuition and fees for academy classes are paid by the local high school.

Students attend academies in the following emphasis areas:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Computer Aided Drafting & Design
  • Electronics Technology
  • Precision Production Technology
  • Health Sciences
  • Welding
  • Business
  • Education
  • Design & Graphic Arts
  • Human Services

Automotive TechnologyThis academy prepares students for careers in all aspects of the Automotive industry. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the Automotive Academy. Automotive Technology students may enroll for their Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 8 and 11 college credits per semester in this program.

Computer Aided Drafting & DesignThis academy prepares students for careers in the architectural or engineering areas. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the CAD academy.  CAD students may enroll for their Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 8 and 11 college credits per semester in this program.

Electronics TechnologyThis academy prepares students for careers in the field of electronics. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the Electronics Academy. Electronics students may enroll for their Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 8 and 11 college credits per semester in this program.

Precision Production TechnologyThis academy prepares students for careers in all types of metal working. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the PPT Academy. PPT students may enroll for the Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 8 and 11 college credits per semester in this program.

Health ScienceThis academy is designed to provide students with the fundamental classes to continue in a career in the Health field. The academy also emphasizes an exploration of careers in the health field, including significant job shadowing experience. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the Health Academy. Students may enroll for the Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 6 and 10 college credits per semester in this program.

WeldingThis academy provides students with knowledge and practice in several areas of welding. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA at their local high school to enroll in the Welding Academy.  Welding students may enroll for the Junior and Senior years in high school and can earn between 6 and 10 college credits per semester in this program.

BusinessThis academy introduces students to several areas in the Business field. The academy also emphasizes an exploration of careers in business, including job shadowing experience in several areas of business. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA at the local high school to enroll in the Business Academy.  Business students must be in their Senior year in high school and can earn between 6 and 10 credits per semester in this program.

EducationThis academy provides students with the foundation classes needed for careers in education. This academy also explores careers in the education field with a significant part of the course job shadowing in educational settings. Students may enroll for their Junior and Senior years in high school. Education Academy students must have at least a 2.7 GPA at their high school to enroll and can earn between 6 and 10 college credits per semester.

Design & Graphic ArtsThis academy gives students a foundation for continuing their education in careers in the design and graphic arts field. Students must be Seniors to enroll. Design & Graphic Arts students must have at least a 3.0 GPA at their local high school and can earn between 6 and 10 college credits per semester.

Human ServicesThis academy gives students a foundation for continuing their education in careers in the Human Services field. Students may enroll for their Junior and Senior years in high school. Human Services Academy students must have at least a 2.7 GPA at their high school to enroll and can earn between 6 and 10 college credits per semester.
