Child Find
- Child Find is a comprehensive program that helps local and
intermediate school districts identify, locate, and evaluate all
children with disabilities birth-25 years of age who are eligible for public special education services. Early identification of handicapping
conditions (ie: physical, emotional, mental, speech and language) is a principle goal of Child Find. Educating
parents to look for early warning signs in the very young child is of primary importance.
- Pre-primary referrals are received at the Brookside Learning Center for children birth
to 5 years of age. Referrals can come from parents, doctors, the Health Department,
Department of Human Services,
hospitals, as well as various other sources. Upon receipt of a referral, the Child Find Coordinator contacts the
parent to schedule a screening. This initial developmental evaluation is usually conducted at the Brookside Learning
Center, but under special circumstances may be conducted in the child's home. The Child Find Coordinator uses the
evaluation results to determine if the referral is appropriate for a more indepth assessment by the preschool assessment
team at Brookside, local school district staff, or possibly by an outside agency.
