School Psychologist
What is a School
Psychologist?
School psychologists are educational specialists who use their knowledge of psychology and educational research
to help the many educational problems experienced by children, teachers, and parents. The school psychologist is
skilled in the areas of psycho-educational assessment, childhood development, behavioral management, and consultation.
In addition, they are advocates for children in all settings.
School Psychologists have to know a lot of information about many different things. The school psychologist must
continually remain apprised of the many issues affecting the lives of students in their schools. The school psychologist
is able to address numerous issues such as the following:
Crisis Intervention |
Behavioral Management Techniques |
Attention Deficit Disorders |
Special Education Regulations |
What is the School
Psychologist's role?
One of the main roles of the school psychologist in the schools is to administer a variety of psycho-educational
instruments to students who are experiencing difficulties (academic or behavioral) in the classroom. Based on these
test results, as well as information collected from the student's teachers and parents, the school psychologist
helps the schools determine if a student would be eligibility for any special education services. School psychologists
work with students who have vastly different educational problems and needs, such as:
Learning Disabilities |
Traumatic Brain Injuries |
Autism/PDD |
Emotional/Behavioral Disorders |
Intellectual Disabilities |
Developmental Delays |
Preschool Assessment |
ADHD Assessments |
How do I contact
a School Psychologist?
When a student appears to be having difficulties learning and a handicapping condition may be suspected, a referral
for an evaluation may be requested. If the student is attending one of the local school districts, the referral
can be made to the Child Study Coordinator who is responsible for special education services in that district.
This can be done by working with the principal of the school building where the student attends. If the child is
five years old or younger, the referral is made through the Child Find Coordinator at the
Brookside Learning Center. A multi-disciplinary team is responsible for assessing and
identifying the specific area of disability or impairment the student may be demonstrating and whether the student
would qualify for any special education services.
